70 RT 340 4 barrel?

Postby hennypenny1 » 02 May 2001 15:13

I just bought a 1970 challenger and Im a little confused about the vin #. It reads JS23H0B238726.
From what i've learned the 340 4Barrel was not available on the '70 RT. Can anyone help.
Thanks, JoAnn.

We learn something new every day.
That's the first one I have ever come across!

Yes. As far as I know the 340 was not offered in the R/T until the 1971 model year.

Your VIN is very late in the 1970 model year so maybe it became available in July or something.

I would be very interested to see the full fender tag. Could you post it here please?

unfortunately there is no fender tag. the last 6 #s on the cowl match the vin though.

Could you check for a build sheet? If it was a special order car, the 4-barrel might have been the reason.

Most 340 package convertibles (code A66) did get R/T badges because they got all the other R/T stuff and there is no body difference in the normal convertible to the R/T convertible.

That did not seem to happen to the JH 340 cars.

The dash VIN in this case is evidence but as these can be faked or altered it is not strong evidence by itself.

However You should never say never in this game and I am sure it is the real thing and there will be an explanation for this car. But without the fender tag or buildsheet we have not enough proof to be totally sure. Good find if it is the real thing though!

According to the production percentages printout I got from Daimler/Chrysler, the smallest engine in a JS anything was a 383. I sure do hope you find that build sheet. Have you checked for the series number on the block and transmission? I know this can be faked also, but it would be a start.

thanks for the replies. The engine is not original but I was told it was correct. I have not looked at the transmission code yet. The only other # I can find is on the cowl. It reads
RT 238726. The car is not done to original specs but I am still thrilled with it. For example it has holley carb, elderbrock manifold, headers and about a 6" lift on back with HD suspension with 15/295/50's on back and 60's on front. It is the car I've been searching for!
