I was at the Spring Fling here in LA and got a code deciphering book. It is small and there is mostly no ink on the cover which is made of a stiff white heavy paper. I will happily help you out with your informational needs until this information is publicly available as it should be.

But you don't know what that "special order" means?

There must have been something about the order that was not normaly possible. It may be something that is only on the build sheet.

M42 reads "Front stone shield moldings". I'm not too familiar with the 72, but that's what the book says. What's a stone shield, anyway, the front valence?

J54 Reads "Sport hood" with the note "Hood scoop(s) on selected models"

Hans, you're welcome of course and I'm happy to help. As for the codes.... it's a very busy time at work right now, so it will have to wait. I type by the Columbus Method (that would be "find it and land") at the blinding speed of 15 to 20 WPM, so bear with me here. I'll be happy to take on anyone's questions for now.

Oh no Dave, don't be afraid...I keep on checking the board more then once a day ! Can't live without it. You all helped me quite a lot since I own my Challenger and I need that cause it's only my second car I own.

Hans is your speedo in klm or mph?

The speedo is in Kph...good point from you, it could be the special order thing... But this winter I gonna restore the car so I hope to find the build sheet somewhere so I can see it exactly.

thats could be it, because your car has a U on the tag and that is U.S.A. specs. american cars came with mph. so someone special ordered it to have kph.

Bet it was an army bloke to use abroad...

G.G. also advertises them in most Mopar magazines. Year One sell them too I think.

BTW I don't own any of these 'white books'. That is why I don't always know the correct meaning of the codes.

Like I keep telling everyone (but no-one listens) I am not an expert. I will however do my best to find the answer to any question raised here. The people with more experience than me that sometimes post here are a great asset to this message board and to you owners out there.

I bought my books from Galen, a couple by mail order and one from him at a show. One of the reasons was there were so many free sources of info that had different opinions on what the codes meant and I needed a definitive source.

I also don't mind helping a guy here and there with some answers, especially someone like Hans who might just have a wee bit more to go through than some of us when it comes to acquiring one of Galen's books. I remember being in the dark when I first tried to decipher my fender tags - not fun.

Thanks Jack! Right now I have my whole fender tag decoded so no more questions about that of me. Just hope to get my hands on the build sheet sometime. Maybe the winter when restoring the car. At least that's what I hope.

Just purchased a 72 Challenger RA for my first project car. Have build sheet but do not know how to totally decipher. Where do I go for info?
Also, were Magnum 500 wheels a factory option?
I also have a light switch to the immediate left of the steering column that has a black plastic knob with a translucent green center. Looks like a switch for fog lights. I see extra wires near the horns but no idea what this switch is.

To get the most out of it you need to read the 1970 page in detail first and then the next year etc until you get to the model year of your car.

Doing it that way you would have found that what you call 'Magnum 500' wheels were a factory option but Chrysler called them 'Chrome Road Wheels' as Magnum 500 is what F**d called them.

I have a page with most options de-coded on it. If you need any help just ask because that is what the message board is for .

From 1970 through 1974, V5_ meant body side protective moldings with a vinyl insert. The X in the third place would determine the color of the molding - black in this case.

Dave, you know more about Mopars than anyone I know, and that must be a lot cus I know people that know quite a bit about Mopars.

could someone tell me what these two option codes are u5x and h38.

A U code would be a tire code and would consist of a U and two digits, so I'm thinking the code you have is a V5X code. V5: Body side protective molding with vinyl insert. X: Black insert color

H38 doesn't appear in either my 1969-1971 or my 1972-1974 code books, so I can't help you with that one - sorry.
