Code Confusion !!

Postby Kevin Morris (Kevin) » 12 Jun 2002 18:36

Hey Dave! Have enjoyed your site for some time, but just now starting to use the message board. Am considering purchasing a "JS23N0B", but am confused by two codes on the fender tag. "H51" is decoded in your site's option list as "single air w/ heater"...does this mean it came with a/c?
Also, it has the code "B14" on the tag. I can not find any reference to this code in any source. Thx for a great site!

KEVIN, H51 = (AIR CONDITIONING WITH FRONT HEATER)
B14 = NOVEMBER 14TH (projected build day)

Kevin. If you look at the thread called 'Where to find the VIN on the vehicle body' I have just posted an image of a tag that shows you were the date code is. The code starts with a single number for the month from 1 = Jan, to 9 = Sept. Then they started with letters after the ninth month so A = October and C = December.

The other two digits are the day of that month.

Cars were not usually built on that day (although of course some would be) but this was more of a date to aim for. Usually the car would be built a little after this date.

On the Broadcast sheet, the first number at the top is the sequence number, and the second category is the Vehicle Order Number. In the VON section, it's split in two. My guess is the first 3 digits of that would be the build date, as mine is 503 and I know my car was produced in May 1971 from the door tag. If I am correct, is this like the Fender Tag with a scheduled production date or is this the actual date?

This is the scheduled date same as on the tag. This is where the info on the tag comes from.

One thing about broadcast sheets I do not understand is what is that first 'sequence number'? The first number on the sheet. It is not the same as the sequential number in the VIN so what is it?

Dave, that's a good question. Unfortunately, the Challenger I'm buying no longer has neither the door tag (taken off in a repaint and not replaced) nor a broadcast sheet. I know Chevrolets have a "sequence number" on both their cowl tags (similar to a VIN tag, only on the firewall next to the master cylinder) and on their build sheets. I was told this was some sort of production line sequence number, that has nothing to do with the VIN, but is used by the workers on the production line in some manner. Friend of mine works in the Dodge Ram plant here in St. Louis (USA), I'll ask him.

Sequence number

Th sequence number on the sheet has to do with the order that the the dealership order was placed into the computer at the plant. I look at only the 1970 broadcast sheets from Hamtramck for the most part, but this is what I have found so far.

If the sequence number (1st box on line one) begins with a "1" then it was to be built on Assembly Line #1 and the fender tag will end with EN1.

If the sequence number begins with a #2, then that car was lated to be built on Assembly Line #2 and the fender tag would end with EN2.

I have a copy of the broadcast sheet on file for sequence # 100001, and the VIN for the car ends in 100052. Scheduled Production Date for this car is August 1st, 1969, the very first day of production for the 1970 Model Year.

What date do they end the production year?

Is the time between used only for getting ready for the new model year? Does the factory close for a holiday in this period?

I don't know about in the US but in Britain factories used to all close the same two weeks in August every year. Not many still do that though.

Dates

I am not sure about the holidays and closures, but the 1970 Model Year at Hamtramck started on August 1st 1969 and continued until at least July 30, 1970. I have Challenger VINs and SPDs on file for both dates. I have not seen one with an SPD of 731, at least not yet.
