VIN tag on door - 71 or 1971. Which is correct?

Postby christer » 19 Mar 2014 12:04

Hello!

A friend of mine will create a new VIN door tag for his 1971 Barracuda conv, since the original VIN door tag is missing.

Question: The car was built in april, 1971. Regarding the text on the upper row: Shall it be "4-71" or "4-1971". We have seen both variants. Which one is correct? (It is a Hamtramck built car.) Thanks!

On my Challenger it was 10 - 69.

But they made changes to the VIN tag from 71 so maybe the door sticker too?

Thanks! Now I have proposed him to use "4-71". That seems to be most common alternative if you do a google search.

The door sticker shown in this thread is a fake, the car was originally a 383 car.

The car was seized & it led to a legal battle in NY state, in the end the guy that had the fake sticker & dash VIN made was found guilty & forced to pay restitution for it & anther car with a fake VIN he sold.

I was mistaken. I found an old photo and it was "10 - 1969". Sorry.

No problem. Maybe both variants are correct? Maybe it is depending on who was the operator that specific day when the door stickers were printed?

The few examples pics of door VIN decals I have collected show 4 digits for 1969, but only two for (19)70.
I will have a new one made for my convertible, since the previous repaint did leave some traces on it and it looks rather bad now.

I found this information on moparts.org : "In mid March of the 1970 model year, they further condensed the data entries by eliminating the first two digits of the year. Instead of 1970, the date simply became 70."

Here is the link I got it from: http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... er=5624254

To find that information really made my day. :D I was searching for clues on the internet and suddenly I stumbled on the answer. Pure luck or dedicated work? :s005: After this, I became filled with doubts, because I though my 1969 (manufacturing date) Challenger had "69" printed on the door sticker. For a number of hours I thought that the information I just had found was wrong. Luckily I noticed that it was printed "1969" on the door sticker of my car, when I visited my garage.

Before I was aware of this information, I advised my friend print "71" on his 1971 Barracuda door sticker. Pure luck, of course. :)

That's what happened to me mate. I remembered "69" and not having the car (and the car not having the sticker any more anyway) I had to go through a load of old photos to find it was in fact "1969".
