Center Console

Postby paterson_chris » 26 Feb 2012 23:02

Has anyone every installed a center console on a car without one? I've got a '73 without one, but I do have the console and bracket. Where do I start? Bolt holes in the floor?? Thanks for any help!

Start by tearing back the carpet to see if some body has removed existing factory brackets, they were spot welded to the tunnel, if nothing looks like it was ever there you'll have to find a friendly owner who'll let you pull the carpet and have a look at the welded on tabs, not hard to fab something, but you'll want to get the positioning right

What do you have for a shifter?
Does your transmission have one of these brackets :

The thing that must be positioned first is the front vertical pivot (I don't know what it's called, for manual trans it would be the Z-bar) which goes through the tunnel floor and into the nylon bushing of the bracket above. All the rest is installed in relation with that pivot rod (shifter brackets, and then console brackets).
There are only 10 kinds of people in this world... those who understand binary and those who don't !

Hi Chris, First of al what trans do you have in the car ? If you have a manual trans my sugestion is to leave it as a console delet car becas it looks better :) I dont like the solution that they made on the console for those E-body manual trans cars but in a auto trans case i agree on that it must be there and it looks mutch nicer

I agree with you Pat the Hurst 4 speed cars do look better with out the factory console set up. I have just converted my auto with the factory console to a 4 speed. It did look good without the console, but as I had one I decided to modify it to fit and see what it would look like. I can remove it, but the storage box is useful.

Cheers.

I had a console in my 72 before I swapped in a 4 speed and I never bothered to install it.
It looks really good without it tho......... think I'll leave it :D
