I'm replacing the chrome shifter top in my car and can't seem to find out exactly how to remove the old one. It looks like its riveted?
Has anyone already done this and if so can you shed some light on it for me?

Thanks!

If your Challenger has the round chrome knob, with the black button on top shifter, it's really easy to remove the knob.
There is a small set screw (hex type) that needs to be removed. Once it's unscrewed, the knob is easily removed. Just watch for the black knob and the spring to pop out on you.

Safety glasses on!

The black knob is mounted on a threaded pin, so you will have to unscrew it. I believe that you will have to unscrew the whole setup at the same time, that is both the black knob and the round handle. (The black knob has a guide which prevents it from beeing unscrewed, I think.) Give it a try.

Your talking about the chrome piece that houses the black plastic slide, the gear shift indicator and light aren't you? The piece that accually bolts to the brackets on the floor. That part is rivited together. The new ones that BE&A sells have threads cut into them and uses screws to hold it together.

You can try grinding off the rivits and drilling it for screws. Otherwise you need to find a nice 71-74 style with the correct slide for the T-handle. You can always buy the new one that screws together but it isn't cheap.

I have a feeling he wasn't talking about the knob on the top which is why I asked.

Yeah, I was talking about the chrome section that the slider is encased in. Looks like it has rivets, so I'm going to have to drill them out and go with small nuts/ bolts or screws.
I just got done upgrading/ replacing all the gaskets internally as well.
