Thought I'd start this conversation, as I've only been able to have face-to-face discussions about the correctness of aftermarket dash woodgrain. I was under the impression that purchasing the metal silk screened replacement peices that are sold by many, is the way to go. I was also under the impression that the sticker type was a lousy choice. I think I was missinformed.
I purchased the expensive metal woodgrain and It is way off from the original. The original peices are a beautiful deep wood finish with a dull or matte finish. They actually resemble wood to some degree. The reproduction piece I recieved is way off. Overall, It is shiny and has a brighter, orange hue to it. It resembles painted metal, not wood! It's a shame that these things cost a couple thousand dollars to restore and the $250 woodgrain is wrong. I recently saw the sticker that I was told to avoid, and it looked quite good. Actually, it looked great and wasn't an eye sore as the metal peices are. It had a dull finish, and deep dark colour.
I'm curious to hear of others experiences. I've seen many of these metal peices in cars – same that I have. I picked mine up from PG classics, Someone told me yesterday that they have come out with a more accurate restoration peice. Does anyone have any info or opinions on this subject. I'd LOVE to hear some feedback on this.
Here is my restored woodgrain - see below.
Thanks guys.
