Different gauges

Postby rockanimal » 05 Nov 2006 22:00

Why is it that the standard gauges look different? I never thought about it before. Does anyone know the difference? In e-bay they all say NOS...

I can only guess.

Challenger had two different instrument panels and there might have been changes from year to year. Maybe even export models were slightly different?

Or maybe they are from different Mopar models alltogether?

It is a good question though. We should document what is right and what is wrong.

I do believe the 70-71ish with the standard dash had the one style, after those years the standard dash had the other style gauges, the first pic in set you posted.

Yeah I was thinking the same as you Spitfire. I got both styles and I'm thinking of putting the ones that say Temperature instead of temp, Gasoline instead of Fuel etc in my dash. The weird thing is that the other ones were in my dash since I bought the car (which is a 70 SE) and it really doesn't look like someone have switched them ever but I can't tell for sure of course. It's not a big deal either, I was just a bit curious...

Yeah, the 70-71 ones were different, different labels and looks. My 72 came with a trunkload of spare parts including a 71 dash with different gauges.

Mystery solved! According to an e-bayer who are selling all these different ones separately, the ones that says Temperature instead of Temp etc. are from the standard gauge Challenger SE, Barracuda Gran Coupe & Western Specials, 1970-71 only. And the others are from the rest of the standard Challengers and Cudas 1970-74. Seems right to me but I'm sure Chrysler made some "mistakes" at the factory too. I'm glad though since I now got the "right" ones in my SE.
