Hey, I had a question about stereo stuff. I looked through the posts with the search function but couldnt find the info I was after. My car has......had a 3 speaker setup, two behind the rear seat and one in the center of the dash. I also have holes for speakers in my door panels which I plan to fill. My question was, what's the purpose of the 5th speaker in the dash? Aren't speaker systems and stereos designed for left and right channels only? (Well, the subwoofer too but I wasnt going to have one of those) So where would that center speaker fit in as far as channels? Do newer radios combine the left and right imputs for a center channel? Thanks

With an AM/FM stereo radio three-speaker dash, the AM comes through the center speaker and the FM stereo comes through the side speakers with the original wiring. At least, that's what happens with mine.

But what about the speakers in the rear parcel shelf Jack? Were they used on the stereo units?

My car just had the AM radio with one speaker in the dash. No other speakers.

And just to note. No Challenger came with speakers in the doors.

Dave, I looked up the rear speakers in the accessories section of the shop manual and could only find a reference to them in the section about the AM/FM stereo 8-track player as being wired from a separate fader switch. Personally, I have no experience with rear speakers except as aftermerket add-ons. As soon as I have the cash, I will be buying a more modern AM/FM stereo/CD player to be installed in my glove box and hooked up to the 6x9 tri-axials waiting patiently in the package tray of my Challenger.

Hm, that would make sense that the center speaker is AM, thanks. Yeah, since the windows were open on my car for a couple of years, (previous owner) the door panels were trashed. I bought some ones off of ebay for 25 bucks, reproduction ones, only problem is someone hacked some speaker holes in em. So now I have two more speakers going in!

What I would do for the best sound quality and performance is replace your front speakers with new 3.5 inch coax speakers. JL audio makes a real nice coax that drops in.
the rear deck handles 6x9's.
These 4 speakers run off the stereo radios.
You can also add an amplifier to get much better sound quality, which can be mounted under either seat or under the package tray in the trunk between the rear speakers to keep it out of the way.

The guy that owned my car before me installed stereo speakers that fit the single hole, in the center of my dash. Sound quality is pretty good and complements my Kenwood 6x9's in the back. I think the front is Pioneer. I'll take a look or give the previous owner a call.
