1970 Seat belts-Brand names

Postby regnellahC » 13 Jun 2006 1:52

What was the stock, brand name seat belt companies Dodge used for 1970 Challengers?
Pontonier, American Safety or both?
I can't find any old research on this.

Asking around I get a mixture of answers- mostly that Chrysler used both companies in 1970, finding sometimes a mixture of both stamped on the receiving clips and that the clips were identical.
Thanks

regnellahC, my '70 has 'American Safety' belt clasps (code 445588), no sign of 'Pontonier' anywhere.

A buddy did some research on this a while back, if I recall correctly, the Hamtramck plant used Pontonier buckles while the LA plant used American Safety buckles.

I will send him an email and ask to make sure.....

His response;

"Yes, every once in a while (rarely) you may find an American Safety belt (1 or 2) in a Dodge main car, but I have never seen a full set."

I currently have the lap/shoulder belt set for my 1970 Challenger and would like to either purchase the new belt set (repro) or see about having my belts restored.
Any ideas?

This guy restores mopar seatbelts with the PROPER(matching) inside parts and proper, original stitching patterns. He'll also restore yours.

If your looking to buy restored ones----
Be careful with some who claim to restore or replace buckle parts.
You must look at the inside parts of the buckle.
The lock assembly HAS to match or the clip will not lock.
If they don't show and describe the inside parts, stay away.

What about ASE 445685?
Are they compatible with a 1970 Challenger?
