Dash Restoration

Postby Brant » 14 Jul 2004 19:54

I share a problem that seems to be very common for 30+ year old e-bodies. My speedo grinds above 40m/h and the needle shakes irratically -the cause of this being rusting speedo gears. (I'll also replace the cable) Has anyone restored a non-ralley dash themselves? I would like to sand/oil those gears. Is it possible to get into the gears? Also, can the clear plastic be removed from the front, lending itself to a good buffing?

cheers

The only bit I can help on is the clear plastic. It does indeed come off and polishes up a treat! :D

The only thing I did with my gauges was paint the pointers and touch the dials up a little. I tried to get the tach working accurately but failed miserably.

I did get into the tach though so I guess the speedo will be the same?

Don't touch the dials though. The black comes off with the slightest touch. Or was it the white? Can't remember now.
