Steering Column Teardown and Rebuild

Postby GibDTD » 20 Mar 2012 3:08

It seems like most of you already know how to tear down and rebuild a steering column for our cars, but there aren't many articles that cover the procedure, nor is there documentation here. In the next couple days I will begin tearing down my second column and rebuilding it. I was wondering if I should document it and make a full write up here for future reference. Should I proceed with the documentation? If so, anything I should focus on that people seem to have trouble with it?

The original (rebuilt already) was from a 74 Challenger with a column shift automatic, and the one I will be tearing down is out of a 71 Challenger with a floor shift automatic, Both with power steering. I will probably mix and match parts to eliminate the shift lever location and the gear indicator.

There is a really good article from one of the Muscle mags, might be Mopar Action, has an excellent picture breakdown that shows all clips, sleeves, bearings etc, see if I can remember it.
Sure there's a link on here for it somewhere

I have broken down and cleaned up the parts for the column and ordered a few necessary parts to rebuild it like new, but I'm not sure if my electronics are good. All the contacts look good, but there could be hidden issues. Before I begin reassembling the steering column can anyone post or pm me clear instructions to test the circuits in the column. If you pm me instructions I will include them in my write up and give you your due credit.
Any insight is much appreciated and I'm sure will go a long way for all who read this in the future.
Thanks
