REAR SPRING EYE BOLTS

Postby Adrian Worman » 21 Nov 2010 16:22

I have to unbolt the rear spring hanger boxes off my car because the main bolts ( which I managed to loosen ok!) are in so that the bolt head is toward the inside of the floorpan and the nut is facing the outer edge of the floorpan. Is this right? Means I have to drop both hangers to remove the spring eye bolts :?

When I lifted my dodge Ramcharger I just cut the spring bolts. Some were facing in and some were facing out  Not to mention the right front and left rear were 9/16 while the opposite were 1/2" Replaced with grade 8 bolts.

I pulled the spring hanger boxes out in the end, was the only way I could access the bolts. Can't believe wot a nightmare it turned into either, everything went wrong, cut the side off my finger and carried on working to find blood all over the place, still, next time will be a breeze won't it :?:

The nut faced the outside from the factory.

Yeah this all kind of rings a bell in my head now.

I now seem to remember having to drop the front spring hangers to remove the front eye bolt. But I think I loosened the bolt first because I figured it would be easier to break it free while still attatched to the chassis.

Sorry i didn't remember that before you started mate. :s008:

These are my modified offset A-body front spring hangers which i fitted (along with offset rear hangers) to move my springs in by 7/8ths of a inch.

Those are custom (made to my own spec) springs too.

On the back I welded two nuts up where i used to have the spring eye attached in order to give some adjustment.

At some point i decided to mount the spring (on this passenger side only) lower so I drilled a new hole lower and slightly further forward. I can't remember the rational behind that exactly but it was one of my tricks to try and keep the car level on a hard launch but also allow it to sit fairly level at rest.
Anyway. I never did weld that bottom nut in place. It is a bit too deep for the bolt but it has never come loose over the years so it has stayed that way.

Thats exactly how it appeared on mine, undid the bolts, came undone ever so easy, and then dropped the hanger boxes.
The ES poly bushes fit well and look like quality pieces, made sure I put plenty of the heavy silicone grease on the outer surfaces and used a Dremel to clean and deburr all the bushing eyes, quite happy with it
Your custom parts look better manufactured than the factory pieces :!:

Same here, I once removed the hangers instead of the leaf bolt, it hit the frame if I remember right. Maybe it's a safety feature, like the left hand lug nuts. :?
