17S on a 70 challenger?

Postby 440forPOWER » 15 Jul 2008 3:07

Hello, is anyone running 17s on their challenger? I'm thinking of putting on a set of 17 inch torque thrust rims and was curious on what the best size tire for a factory bodied 70 is. Also any pics would be great. Thanks in advance

If you look in (or use the search facility) the Wheels/brakes/suspension section of the board you will find many topics on this subject and some examples.

I'm running 19's. The really interesting part (apart from the aesthetics) is how wide you cant to go, and what backspacing is required for that.

Keep the overall wheel diameter as close as stock as possible (check out sites like this one : http://www.bigcustomwheels.com/rt_specs.jsp to check the size you want vs stock size, which was close to 225/70/15).

You can go as high as 9 or 9.5 on the rear (9.5 on a 19", I'd say 9" for a 17" wheel, to allow a little more bulge since the tire will be taller).
I currently have 5 1/4 BS on the rear (for a 9.5" wheel, you'd want 5"BS for a 9" wheel, 4 3/4 for a 8.5" wheel, and 4.5 BS for a 8-inch wheel).

Mileage may vary on your car, so don't take those figures at face value and check (on both sides!).

You may have to go up or down one size to find real-world tires, but that's usually no big deal (usually less than 2% difference).

You could probably use 225x55/17 up front, with 275x50 or 255x55/50 on the rears.
