Disc Brake Confusion

Postby cv70chall » 08 Mar 2008 14:31

I'm nearing the stage where I'll be able to covert my front drum brakes to disc on my 70 challenger.
There has been nothing more confusing than trying to figure out who makes the most reliable/ best disc brake conversion kit.
Baer?
Stainless?
Bembro?
US Brake?

What problems am I expecting to run into when selecting a kit?
If there is someone that has done this conversion on the same car- annd has had a good experience with a particular brand, any suggestions would be excellent.

Thanks!!

They all do the same thing. Performance wise they are about the same.

I think the way to go about it is to see which conversion kit is the easiest to do with what you are starting with i.e. how much of your original equipment can you keep (if you want to keep it).

Then look wheel fit. Some of the kits only fit big wheels. Watch out for that.

After that it is just down to price and availability.

Yeah Dave is right. I wouldnt want huge wheels but those big brakes are sure nice. Have you ever thought about using an adaptor, then with a set of Dodge Viper Calipers/1" thick Cop Car one piece H.D. rotors, it would fit disc brake wheels that are 15"? It would also be much much cheaper than a complete aftermarket kit. www.arengineering.com dig the cailper adapter kits. They did a bunch of articles in the various mope mags on it.

I don't think the Viper calipers will fit with 15-inch wheels. I seem to remember there was an issue with that when I looked into it a couple of years ago?

It fit some 15" disc brake wheels Dave. I think they were the Cop Car or Ralleys. It didnt fit 15" drum brake wheels is what the article said, it also stated that the caliper got very close to the rim and to check for interference and clearance. This option would save some money and thats why I posted it, of course a lot of people will want to go to a bigger wheel and low profile rubber to reduce sidewall flex and improve handling, thus a bigger wheel would be needed to look 'right' and fill the wheel wells properly. A 16-17" wheel would probably be perfect and not have that 'donk' look.

I just looked at their web site.

We have also been told by customers that the 15x7 rallye rims from Wheel Vintiques will fit if a thin spacer is used

I think I worked out that my 15x8 Wheel Vintiques front wheels would probably have issues.

I bought a kit to convert my 71 from 11" drums, I got it from Speedway Motors for about $450 , It came with spindles, rotors, calipers, pads, and hoses, some of the parts were mopar part#'s. It was easy to install everything fit great. I cant tell you how they work since I dont even have the new brake lines on yet but the price was right and it seems to be good quality.

http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive ... eeper.html I am including this info for data only. Not advocating anything. Just trying to give the man more info on which to base his decision. Quote from the article,"amazingly this clears the OEM 15" wheels".
