How much does it hold? Is the old method of filling till its almost at the fill plug too much?

Per the factory service man: 8.75 housing holds, 4.4 pints 3.5 Imperial GL-5 or equivalent, fill till it weeps out the fill plug, then install plug. Burn rubber at earliest convenience.(Seriously it says that!) 1 pint=16 ounces or 551 ML. So total capacity would be approx. 70.4 ounces total.

Yes. It has to be just starting to run out of the hole to be at the correct level. If you have a sure-grip you need to use limited slip diff oil or add an additive.
