Lug Nut Torque

Postby Jon » 06 May 2007 19:54

This is a little off the Challenger subject but thought maybe someone here could help.

I replaced the tires on my trailer and when tightening the lug nuts the max I feel comfortable with is 75 ft-lb. It seems like if more torque is applied it may damage the threads. They are clean chrome steel wheels using 1/2"- fine thread, and a tapered seat. I think a bit more torque would be correct but not really sure I want to try at this point.

Thanks!

75-85 is fine.

Without looking it up I seem to remember 75 is the factory torque for Challenger wheels?

I use 85 on my Challenger though.

Thanks Dave. It's a boat trailer and the threads are coated well to try and prevent corrosion. Maybe the torque is not completely accurate or I am a justa "Conan".

I have been using 100 ft-lb on the Dodge. Guess I should back it down a bit.

I just checked the manual and the factory spec is only 65lbs.

I am still tightening mine to 85 though.

Me too.

I just read online that the threads need to be dry (and clean of coarse) to get the proper torque. So lubing them is a no no. :disbelief:

I just remembered! That is why I go to 85lbs. It is because I put copper grease on them.
