can anyone tell me what type of fluid to put in my power steering pump (1972 -318- filler cap located on top of pump) as its whining and has no fluid on the "dipstick"? (uk).. and is the pump linked to anything else...ie transmision>?? :hmmm:
Yes I know I sound a bit stupid... but ... its easy when you know the answers... and if you have a manual to work from ,..( currently on order !)

Just buy some power steering fluid! I wouldnt worry about the exact type. It is easy to find these days because of the number of cars with power steering.

Back when I first started messing with cars you couldn't find it anywhere. At least up in the North you couldn't because no-one could afford cars as posh as that up here.

So I just used auto transmission fluid and I have been using transmission fluid (type F) ever since with no problems.

Except now I have manual steering because I love the physical workout of steering two ton cars with fat tyres around car parks.

It does not have a lot to say about it in the manual except that the pump will indeed sound noisy when low on fluid.

It does give a Mopar fluid part number but God knows what it actually is. :s008:

many thanks

I'm no Yank, and I won't try and prove you wrong, cause you're right. ATF can be used in a pinch for sure, as many before you have done it Power steering fluid of course is the correct oil to use. I belive it has something to do with the oil viscosity and anti-foaming.

Transman :s002:

thanks - job done!

I used ATF in my 30 year old pump and the seals began to leak on the gearbox. Then I replaced it with power steering fluid the leaks went away.

For now? :s022:

Another project on my list for sure.
