Dog dish and steelies

Postby Eddie » 21 Feb 2007 23:00

Well spring is almost here and for a simple yet satisfying project I think I am going to sandblast the 15" Police wheels I have and then prime and paint body colour,(FE5), red, I love the dog dish hubcaps or wheel covers as some refer to them, does any one have any close up PICS? Does the hupcaps have the Triangle Dodge Divison on them? Are there any accurate or close to accurate re-pops available? Any help and knowledge is of course appreciated! Understated performance is so cool and Jens current Challenger R/T on his registry is the ultimate! I cant tell the emblem on them however!

It looks like these ones. The so-called redline dog dish. I'm not sure what years they were stainless and what years they became aluminum. These pictures were taken from an ongoing e-bay auction of stainless steel ones so let's see how much they go for!

Thank you Robert, thats Perfect!!Any guess on what a fair reasonable price might be? 128.00 sounds fair for stainless.

No, I could only guess. $200? I'm sure they go for more than $128 though. I was looking for dog dish hubcaps for my 1979 Aspen wagon a couple of months ago but I was looking for cheap used ones and got these other ones instead, for only $50 (the ones in the second picture is mine, the others from an e-bay auction). They have a few dings and are aluminum but then again it's for my daily driver up in cold Sweden so buying stainless redline in mint condition would be pretty dumb...

Anyway, I THINK these ones without the red line and Chrysler emblem was used on E-bodys too, but I'm NOT sure. I think the redlines look better though.

My dog Hershey is such a "ham" and loves his picture taken and always bumps my hands when I type on the keyboard, as if he doesnt want me on the computer. :blushes: Here are my police wheels 15" that I am gonna blast away with on my Harbor Freight pressure blaster (30 Gallon). It strips em in minutes! What type of paint should I use? Rattle can? Two stage Dupont PPG in FE5?

Use the same paint as you put on the body of the car or it will look funky.

Thats what I will do then. Jack T. what type of paint? "Rattle can" or dual stage PPG? I have a compressor,(5 H.P.) 15 Gallon and a Harbor Freight pressurized paint gun. BTW, Take care of yourself in this record heat out west man! It is "off the hook" out there! I lived in Sacramento for two years. I remember the morning fog in spring! Also Jack did you mean the same color and type? Sorry for all the questions, I have very little paint and body experience or knowledge. :frown:

Well I got the tires dis-mounted from the rims. No charge. They can have em(tires). They have been on the rims for years, and although looked fine I wouldnt trust them. Now to buy some aluminum oxide and blast away then prime.(No it's not my bedroom Dave, yes my garage/shop is partially carpeted).

Trusty Harbor Freight pressure blaster! I got it cheap and it works great! A 50 lb. bag of oxide is pretty steep however, almost 30.00 bucks! Too bad I dont have a re-claimer.

I think they will look shite on the Chally.

They look great on early to mid '60s cars (when wider than stock) but not on 69-on cars. Usually these were ordered ONLY because the owner intended to remove them and fit custom wheels.

It' will look like fecal matter, dont do it!!I think I'm going to blast them then paint them black and list em for 200.00  BTW, since they are police/fleet service, they are heavier than the Ralleys so... :disbelief:
