Need info on space saver spare for '70 T/A

Postby 69judge » 27 Mar 2005 4:47

I'm a new owner of a '70 T/A. The broadcast sheet shows the W34 option, which I believe indicates a space saver spare. It also lists Road Wheels 71 and Spare Wheel 81, with color TX9 (I have not been able to decode these numbers). I see space saver spares on eBay with several different size wheels and tires and either BF Goodrich or Goodyear tires. Some of the wheels have a 6th hole - 1/2 inch, with claims that this is THE correct one .... Does anyone have info on what would be a correct spare for these codes? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

T/A Space Saver

Attached picture is of an original space saver in my T/A. BF Goodrich F78-14 on a 6.5" rim, it has the extra 6th hole, white plastic value cap, white paint inspection mark on the rim. TX9 means Black paint on the rim.

How 'correct' you want your spare tire to be? You can find the correct tire easily enough, take it off the incorrect rim (AMC, GM, etc) and then remounted on the proper Mopar rim, drill the extra hole, put on the reproduction tire label, proper reproduction value cap, and presto, 1 Space Saver Spare for a fraction of the cost of the real thing and would take a real expert to know the difference. There is a guy on Ebay that sells them repro'd like this.

Hope this helps.
