Steering House - help needed - urgent

I need your help urgent!
This morning I brought my challenger ( 72 Ralley ) to the garage because I hadn't any powersteering when I hit the brakes. There was enough oil in it, the belts were tighten enough and the steeringpump gave oil.

Next thing they did was bolting off the thing that's on the steering house. When they turned the steering wheel there did came oil out of as it should be. They cleaned the whole thing and wanted to try it again so they put everything back on...Since then the steering wheel went all the way to the left... they thought they placed a spring upsidedown so they turned it. But then the steering wheel went all the way to the right! And this while they set everything back as it was before they started !?

Anybody any suggestions Does one of you have some pictures/explaination out of any manual about that steering thing.

Then please mail it to me or fax it to
0031-105990040 rather faxing then mailing cause my printer doesn't work anymore...

Many thanks
Hans

Hans!

That bit on the top of the steering gearbox is a valve. It is held down with two bolts yes? The holes the bolts go through are long so that the valve can be slid back and forwards by a few mm.

You need to tighten these two nuts only just enough so that the valve can move 0.5mm at a time with a tap of a hammer.

With the front wheels off the ground start the engine. The wheels go over to one side yes?

You will find that tapping the valve one way will make it worse and tapping it the other way will make it better until you get so far and then the wheels will start to turn the other way!

You need to set it exactly in the middle so that the wheels do not move either way and the steering does not feel harder in one direction than the other. When you think you have it right try switching the engine off. Then re-start it. The steering wheel should not move at all.

NOW TIGHTEN THE TWO BOLTS UP TIGHT!

Then check again.

The spring goes small end on first I think.

Thanks Dave, that must be it. Weird that the mechanical didn't knew that... Proparbly most cars have some other steering device.

I let you know if it helped.

Thanks again

I don't know what the answer to your first problem (no assist during braking) might be. Sorry.
