I had about 2" in my re-built firm feel unit. The guy at firm feel said they don't have any. They race these things and have. I did not like it so I got a re-built fast ratio manual box. That was better. At first. Now after a couple of thousand miles it has almost as much play as the firm feel unit had.

If they're anything like Datsun steering boxes, there is a locknut on the outside with a screw in the middle, which is to take out the freeplay.

I got a new power steering box from firm feel in the states, and it has virtually no play at all, but watch out if you have big sticky rubber in the front.. it turns out that the the bracket that holds the power steering box flexes quite a bit when you turn the wheel, thus creating a feel of "slackness". I will be welding in reinforcements this winter. Have you encountered this dave?

I found the Challenger box mounting to be quite well supported. At least on my car. I have seen an a-body that did not look as strong. I think they are not as well mounted on the K-member.
