Power Steering Pump

I have a 1970 Challenger 340ci and the power steering hose blows out from what appears to be too much pressure in the line. This is the second occurrence. I have probably driven 500 miles (maximum) between occurrences.

Any suggestions on what might be causing the problem? Should I consider rebuilding the power steering pump?

It could be the way the steering box is set up? I will look at the workshop manual later on when I have time.

I have had a quick look in the manual but cannot find anything specific.

Which line is blowing out? One is a high pressure hose and the other is just a return line and not under any great pressure. The high pressure hose has not been replaced with a normal hose at some point has it? Year One stock the correct hoses.

Is it harder to turn in one direction compared to the other? Does the steering wheel 'kick' to one side when you fire the engine up?

If I was you I would first make sure the steering box was set-up correctly. Follow this link. http://www.challenger440.pwp.blueyonder. co.uk/cgi-bin/disc/show.cgi?tpc=6&post=3 00#POST300

I think the first few parts at this link tell you how to set the box up. The last couple of parts just show you in more detail a couple of the earlier steps.

FOUND IT!

There is a flow control valve in the pump. It must be stuck allowing pressure to build as rpm increases. You do indeed need to take the pump apart and service it.
