Power steering fluid

Postby Roel Bester (Roelb) » 11 Jul 2003 21:26

Hi I am sure this is a stupid thing to ask, but what do we use here to top up the power steering fluid. In south Africa we always used ATF, I would appreciate any advice, as I have a slight leak on the Challenger's steering box. Thanks

Don't use ATF fluid. It softens the seals to the point they deteriorate and the boiling point is higher. This may be a possible cause for your leak.

Thanks Tony, hopefully i'll be able to get the proper fluid here in the UK. You are absolutly right, the previous owner filled it with ATF in SA

Martin, looks like our guys are having a big 'think' about the fluidImage, or they are enjoying the lovely day out in their cars !

Actualy it was not seen very much in British Autoparts stores until the last few years. Even so i don't remember seeing it on the shelves lately. No idea why. Except that power steering was never popular on British cars until recently.

Automatics are still very unpopular so you can only get small bottles of trans fluid in normal non-commercial stores.

wow thats too crazy I wonder what it would cost to send some that way. My car has no power steering and it not to bad at all to drive around at all I wonder how much horse power it takes to run it. I would think it would be around 2 to 3 hp I could send some your way at cost if you like let me know and I will see what it will cost

Glenn, thanks for the offer, I'l try a few American parts places here and see if they can help, otherwise I'll let you know, thanks again. As Dave says, the normal carparts places don't stock anything like that, only smal bottles of ATF
