Power Steering

My 73 Challenger has lost motion in the steering. All the lower components are good. The main shaft in the steering gear box is firm. The lost motion seems to be in the shaft from going into the box. When the wheel is turned the shaft moves in and out of the box a small amount corresponding to the lost motion. Is there a way to adjust this out or is it time for a new gear box?

There is a section for steering questions. This is not it. Don't worry, I will move it later.

I mention that mainly because there is a lot of info about setting up the steering box in that section. Try working your way through the posts there. I put some scans up of the workshop manuals instructions.

I found the scans. Look for "Power Steering Adjustments (in vehicle)"
There are also some other threads that might be of use to you.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Thanks Dave. Sorry about the wrong thread. The problem is small and can be lived with it for a while. This is one of those thing that looks complexed but many be simple. There are some old units around here that will be of some value to learn from. When the repairs are made it will posted. In the meantime the Pink car will stay between the ditches. It always runs best in a straight line anyway.
