Disc and Pad upgrade

Postby Adrian Worman » 12 Feb 2014 21:08

I just got round to fitting these one piece drilled and slotted rotors and EBC Yellowstuff carbon ceramic pads.
I had to use a pair of spindle bearing adaptors cos my mid 72 disc spindles are identical to drum spindles.
Ed contacted the vendors in the States for me (ta mate  ) and they got over here for about 50 quid.
Installed new inner and outer bearings, along with new grease seals.
If you look in the pic of the 2 discs side by side from the underside you can see that the boss around the rear bearing is much more obtrusive than the stock piece.
This did cause some problems cos I couldn't understand why the new rotor wouldn't seat against the bearing surfaces, and when I wound the bearing adjuster nut in a little it jammed the rotor.
I whipped off the dust shield from the hub cos it looked like it could've been interfering with the back of the rotor hub and it fitted perfect, so I ground a quarter of an inch off the shield, you can see it modified in the pic along with the bearing adaptor on the spindle.
Managed to obtain a set of EBC Yellowstuff carbon ceramic fast road/trackday pads, along with the high carbon steel content of the rotors and the slots and grooves allowing the heat and gasses to dissipate, these should give a good improvement over the cheapo 2 piece rotors that don't do a very good job of stopping my car, can nearly stop my heart tho

Actually it's not over yet........ I went to install the 2nd disc bearings and get it ready to slip on this Saturday and I noticed the rear oil seal doesn't get anywhere close to the bearings inner race. That means its not sealing anything. I've had a look at the Internet and I've seen the seals that Dr.Diff use on their adaptors and they look a lot different to mine.
There are 2 recesses in the back of the rotor above the bearing collar, the seal I was given by the local parts monkeys fits the outer one, I think I'm gonna take the rotor and bearing set to them and see what else fits.
Anybody on here had this problem when fitting later discs to drum/disc spindles?

Looks great Ade! Yeah,,fitting the seals correctly might need a parts monkey to help with the fitment using an assortment at his disposal. Once he gets the right seal you should be golden. I like those rotors! Are they the same thickness as the factory ones? I also see they are re-inforced around the hub center,,nice! :D

Seals picked up and going into the back of the hubs this afternoon, you can see that they have a smaller dia lip to match the slightly smaller dia spindle.

Another thing that I found really useful from Ade's upgrade is on DR.Diff's site where there is a comparison of various brake upgrades available from stage 1 through to stage 4. I'm thinking about something similar to Ade's upgrade and this makes it clear of what's available though Wilwood don't get a mention.
