I recently replaced my dead wiper motor with a working one and notice that when it is turned off, the assembly does not "return to its neutral position. It just stops where it's at.
Any ideas?

This guys problem was due to him having a 72+ three speed switch on his 1970 that should have had a variable speed switch.

Yeah that's a relatively common issue if you buy a motor that doesn't match your switch, say for example the motor was never there when you got the car etc.
3 speed wiper motor needs a 3 speed switch, 2 speed motor needs a 2 speed switch.........

You see many Mopars with un-parked wipers. Mine were like that when I first got the car.
The contacts in the gear housing on the motor just need a little cleaning up and re-assembly.

The workshop manual has a series of tests in it that you can do to test for correct operation. I remember doing that while sat on my mothers doorstep in the sun with a spare battery between my legs and a couple of wires to hold between the battery and the various spades in the connector. I think it was the very first bit of my Challenger I fixed in the spring of 1990.

It's a 2 speed- exactly what was in the car before I tore it apart. Any diagrams of the assembly I need to be cleaning that would help the cause?

You are going to have to take photos when you take the lid off the gear housing so you know how it goes back together again.

Try the tests in the workshop manual first though in case the issue is in the switch or something.
