Mopar Perf distributor

Postby Adrian Worman » 02 Jul 2012 18:37

I got a new one of these lying about that I wanna fit before the Nats.
I got a stock electronic one in there now that I used an FBO plate on to give me 14deg mech advance but I just wanted to know if anybody knew what the advance curve is like on the MP unit.
It's only so that didn't want the hassle of stripping the new unit to fit the plate unless I really had to

Fit the plate. Keep the springs.

I tell you what. I can strip and plate a distributor in 15 mins these days. The first couple took me an hour a time. Practice makes perfect.

My experience with the MoPar Perf. distributors and Ive used 2, the advance thats set in the dist. when it's new and untouched leaves a lot to be desired. It had around 10 degrees mechanical with a super fast curve all in by around 2000 RPM's. So it's not ideal and has to be worked to provide a good street performance curve which should be around 15-25 initial,,depends on how much duration on the intake,(to be precise it's the intake valve opening and closing points),, and a total curve all in by around 2800 RPM's or so. It's really set up for drag racing,,but they could also adjust the initial so it would at least idle better. A lot of guys just remove the vacum advance but for a true street car it runs better with the curve properly adjusted, and a set amount of vacum for de-cel and slight throttle cruising. Have fun at the Euro Nats! :s003:

The MP "performance" distributors I have worked on over the years had only a few degrees less than a stock distributor. Round about 20-25 degrees mechanical.

Unless they have started making them with less timing these days?

I'd better just drop it in and see how much advance I can get, easy to see with the nice old SnapOn dial back digital light I still got
The timing I've got now is 20 initial, 34 @ 3000rpm and vac up to just about 50, it all works fine but I just thought it would be a good idea to fit the new and better unit, more stable and accurate timing etc :?:
I can't wait for the gig lads, started dribbling already

Sorry Dave, I meant 20 degrees mechanical. Regardless, the 'curve' was too fast and need much more initial. The MP dist. used to be made by Mallory, at least thats what Don@FBO said,, he also said the new ones are offshore sourced and are in his words, "Junk" The one I bought off him was a new one but with his plate and mag pickup, custom curve to match my cam ect. Works great! Ade, sounds like a good curve to me and is very close to what I use in my SixPack 440.

You have to remember that Don is an ex-pat Brit and one of the most racist and pig headed people I have had the misfortune to "communicate" with. Although communicate is probably the wrong word because he never listens to a thing you say.

But anyway. Anyone not of "Anglo-Saxon" decent is not capable of making anything well according to Don.

You also have to remember that in the far east they make things to a price. American companies are used to trying to get the best deal possible. Asians don't work like that. If you ask them if they can supply the same part for a fraction of the price they will happily do that. But at a cost to the quality in some way.

In other words you get what you pay for.

Just thought I'd let you know what was inside the MP dist when I pulled it apart yesterday to drop the FBO plate in.
I reckon it had just over 20 degrees of mech advance in it, the springs were far too loose and soft for a road tune tho, a stock looking spring and a pink one with a really long loop on the end so that it doesn't give any tension until the weight is right out. I can see why the curve is so bloody fast then, I think it took not much more than a 1000rpms to get there.
I installed the plate to give 14 deg of advance and fitted a gold spring as well as a soft stock spring, that combo gave me a curve that stopped at 3000 roms.
