MP perf distributor

Postby Adrian Worman » 05 May 2012 17:57

I got an MP perf dist for my 440, is it actually any better than a stock factory dist?
I modded mine with an FBO advance plate and don't wanna tear them both apart to change the parts over if there's no real advantage.
On the subject of ignition systems am I going to have to install an MSD System or similar unit to provide enough spark to fire the 500" stroker motor or can I happily use my FBO electronic box and factory distributor?
I like those MSD dist with the whole system hidden inside the cap, look pretty tidy

Mate use the best distributor you have and couple it with a HEI module just like me and Dave 999 keep banging on about on the MMA forum.

Ta Daveman, already considered that set up, I've actually got a spare GM module from me mates at USAuto just in case I had a Mopar module failure............I think I may not wait for that to happen

Have you looked at the new FireCore distributors and Matching Coil? Looks like nice stuff and dyno testing looks promising. I think they are in the final stages of development,, dont know if they are available for sale yet? I used a FBO dizzy from Don. When I get my engine ready for street usage it will have a vacum can. I think this is absolutely necessary for true street use. Just my opinion!!!! The gm hei stuff may be OK,, I just remember changing those 5 then 7 pin modules on a constant basis!!

I've got Dons stuff in my Chally now, it's fitted to a stock dist tho with an advance plate. I got a Mopar Perf unit in that bunch of parts for the stroker motor, along with an MP drive gear and I thought I'd make use of it but only if it was actually any better quality than the factory piece.......
I suppose it's worth using cos its new and ought to give more reliable and consistent performance, maybe the vac can is a little better

Well the 'drive gear' should be pinned, the stock was a press fit only,, so the MP unit is better! If it were mine,, I would use the MP distributor,, with a lot of initial, probably at least 20 depending on your cam of course, then Don's or aftermarket ECM NOT the MP one. They supposedly drop the dwell,(coil saturation time), after 4,000 or so RPM's ,,, this will change the timing,(Retard it). Don's ECM's reportedly dont do that. Regardless, I would use a MSD-6 capacitor style ECM with a Blaster-II Coil if your budget allows if not use Don's ECM. This should be a good strong ignition. If you do use a MP dist. I would also get a cheap shaft collar. Dave did this and reported his timing improved considerably. I am gonna do this too when it's in the car,,, someday

I have to ask,, is the MP 'drive gear' cast iron or bronze?? I need a clue as to what type of camshaft you are gonna run? If a steel billet soild or hyd. roller you gotta have the bronze gear,,, VERY EXPENSIVE!!!!
