Alternator mounting

I don't think my alternator is mounted properly. Can some nice people upload a couple of pics of the mounting bracket and tensioning arm. Also a guide to the distance between head and alternator casting lug.
I don't think I've ever had the correct adjusting arm,head mounting bolt or even water pump pulley :? Some reference shots would help me no end, I've got a 440 with a steel crank and power steering. Cheers mates :)

There are only two types on big block Challengers. One for those with AC and one for those without. If your 440 water pump is roughly the correct age either kit will bolt up.

But there are complications. The water pump pulley was different between AC and non-AC cars as well. You often see alternator brackets bodged up with mounting bits from both types on cars where AC has been removed.

Too late at night for me to take a photo of the non-AC type. But then my pulleys are not stock so a photo of mine is probably not much use to you.

this engine/car had a/c , it is not all there but hopefully you can see how the brackets are, i hope this helps :thumbsup:

That is the later mid-70s version I think. Wouldn't be fitted to Challengers like that. :disbelief:

But here are some photos and a drawing of what you should have (assuming no AC). These will fit all B and RB blocks with water pump housings made after 1968.

440 Source have everything you need.

perhaps cause its on a barracuda that came from goober and gomers garage,but that is what i have, and someone changed it, or maybe that is the way it came this car did have factory a/c

What year Barracuda? Numbers matching?

I had factory AC and PS on my 440 when I got it. The brackets are similar to the ones I posted above but not the same and spaced differently (further out from the block) with a more shallow water pump pulley. No idler pulley for sure. I can't remember when they started fitting those. Not 1970-71 I thought? :?

Then again. Maybe mine was missing and the idler should have been there? It is in the factory manual even in 1970. :? I probably have that wrong then.

I can't remember how mine was belted now after all these years. I do remember that the alternator tensioned one belt and the PS tensioned the other.

yea its lisas car, and who knows what happened to this car, it is a 70 that had a 71 front end on it, so perhaps someone changed it,it is a 383 a/c car are the brackets different from a 383 to 440? perhaps i should delete so as not to confuse things :s006:

when i get time this after noon i will look closer to see if the numbers match im pretty sure they do but i need to make sure

Thats well helpfull mates, thanks for the usual speedy replies :D The alt bracket looks right, the tensioner definately ain't and the water pump pulley still not sure, but you've gimme loads to work on. Pretty sure I can work it out :thumbsup:

ok the numbers match on lisas car so that is known, lol i never have checked that ,

anyway, it looks like from the diagram , the a/c unit is on top , pushing the alt. out further,

so perhaps like you said dave someone has either removed the a/c on adrians car,and didnt get the correct replacement parts and (i have done this on other cars) put a longer belt on the bypassing the idler,and just running it with out the a/c,

these things are simple to look at, but a little complicated to actually make the work :s022:
