Rear side marker wiring

On the original wiring harness, there was a single wire going to each rear side marker light. I am installing the new painless system and there is one wire going to each rear side, however, I bought new "pigtails" for them and now there is a male and a female end to the socket. Should I just use the original sockets with the 1 wire to each, or should I use the new pigtails? If so, what do I do with the other wire?
Also, according to the shop manual, the tail light sockets ground themselves to the light housing, but looking at these, there is a gasket between where there would be ground contact. How is this?
I am so electrically challenged it is pitiful, so I will probably need a lot of help with this. Your help is very much appreciated.
Between the headliner, the wiring and the headers, I see a lot of alcohol in my future!

Run a ground wire in. Otherwise you are relying on fasteners, nuts, etc biting through the paint to ground.

The original ground would be through the studs and the retainer housing. A separate ground would add insurance though. Like on the front markers.
