I bought a engine wiring harness from yearone but they do not tell you what wire goes were! my problem is the wiring for the coil has plugs like the horn. I never seen plugs going to the coil. can anyone help? I have a 70 challenger rtse . it was a 383 it is now a 440 six-pac. I ordered a 440 six-pac wiring harness with the electronic conversion !! what color wire goes to the pos. side and the neg. side of the coil??. thanks in advance. DIX... :s006:

First things first : did you buy the exact reproduction harness (with points distributor wiring) or the "modified for electronic ignition" version?

If you got the points version, check out the 1970 wiring diagram below :

70ChallengerA.JPG

Both wires going to the coil are black. One from the ballast resistor (+), one from the distributor (-) (there's one more for the tachometer on the (-) pole, it's gray).
(At least I think the wire from the distributor is black, that's the case on all I've seen)
If you check out the third diagram on this page :
http://challenger.mpoli.fi/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108
you'll see the positive wire from the ballast resistor may be dark blue.

If you have the modified version, check out this 1973 Challenger diagram :

73ChallengerA.JPG

Coil negative pole has :
- a black with yellow tracer wire coming from the ECU.
- a gray wire going to the bulkhead connector (should be the tach wire, I guess)

Coil positive pole has :
- a brown wire coming from the ballast resistor (it should have a funny connector with a nylon prong on the ballast resistor side, it's meant to go only one way on the resistor)

There may be variations between the OEM 1973 and the repro modified version, but the basics still apply : the positive side should only have one wire coming from the ballast resistor, the negative side will have on "input" wire from the triggering device (points or ECU) and one "outpu" wire to the tach.

From memory, the engine harness should contain the other following wires :
    - violet : temperature sender (water pump housing)
    - gray with flat female spade terminal : oil pressure sender, back of the block
    - green with red tracer : horn (2 wires, high and low)

The wire(s) going to the coil should have eyelet terminals.

Just in case, here are diagrams for the electronic ignition :
OEM 70's version with 5-pin ECU, 4-prong ballast resistor :

May as well post this one too. This is the FBO ignition diagram. The "black" wire usually has a yellow tracer and the "blue" wire usually has a yellow tracer.
