Sourcing firewall bulkhead connectors

Postby jr » 25 Jun 2009 20:38

I'm active today. My third new thread within 15 minutes. :)

Old wiring harness is toasted on that 70 project I have. I know there's new harnesses available but they're bit pricey and I would still need to install dozen or two of new wires due my EFI plans especially since I don't like idea of placing computer stuff under hood and would rather put them under dash for some protection.

I managed to find Painless 40130 which is 22 pins. Not quite enough to do everything, but two should do it. Painless wants $100 for each which is insane, but you can get exactly same Delphi connector from Keefer for $29 + shipping.

I can do this electrical stuff myself but there's no point on that unless doing it with proper connectors and wiring right from start. I'm not worried about potential resale value as car is already modified and not matching anything.

Anyone else taken such route and if so what type of connectors you used?

I have considered going that route in the past. You need ti decide how you will manage the wiring (will you use multiplew ire with different color markings, or just a handful different types and tag the wires?).

It gets very pricey fast if you have to go and buy automotive-grade wiring in a wide range of colors and tracer. That, and many connectors...

An aftermarket harness might be an easier way out price-wise, and they'll have the wires marked.

Anyway, you'll need some connectors, which you can find at many internet stores :

http://www.hotrodwires.com : they have harnesses and individual parts

http://terminalsupplyco.com : they have everything. Don't know if they sell to individuals, though.

http://www.connectorsupply.com/catalog/index.php : vast array of supplies too, including a reasonable amount of color wires.

http://www.kayjayco.com/catPWireSelect.htm : mostly interesting for the info page about automotive-grade cables, which they sell. Not much choice in colors though.

http://www.delcity.net : apart from wires, they have everything.

Use Weatherpack connectors (or packard, or Delphi, or whatever they're called where you get them) on anything forward of the firewall. If you have to use one connector that's not waterproof, fill it with grease, it will prevent moisture from eating the metal parts (OEMs use some sort of paste, but I'e never seen this for sale).

jr, are you fitting the connectors at the bulkhead? And if so using the same opening and fuse panel. Sorry if this sounds kinda simple but what mounting and support are you thinking?.
