Courtesy light, Map light and time delay 'relay'

Postby Goldenblack440 » 02 Feb 2009 14:33

Hello -

Christer, i am hoping you can help me- i think you are the electrical expert...but welcome anyone who knows this...

My 73 has the Lighting Package option. I got some of the parts in a bag when i bought the car. I cannot work out where the Courtesy Light goes. If that is what i have shown here? The bulb is sealed into a can with just a tiny opening for the light- it is more like an ash tray light, but the wire shown is very long, over one metre long. I think it lights up the footwells when the door is opened and they go off about 20 seconds later.

Also where does the Map Light go and where is the switch for the Map Light located? And what is teh Switch Title Lamp as shown in the diagram below?

The time delay relay shown is just a heat resistor wound around one terminal. As the current heats up the contact, it bends away from the other contact and opens the circuit- turning off the lights. This also powers the ignition key courtesy light.

I cannot see where this light shown in the photo would go, with such a long lead. It is not the Map Light and not the trunk light. Even the hole through the mounting bracket is not accessible with a screw driver as the light can covers it.

Anyone seen these Courtesy Lights and Map Lights? Thanks

Just found some more connectors and lights. These are all lighting hardware from the 73 Challenger. The top light with the very short wire (blue arrow)- perhaps that is the Map Light?

There is this bulb - Red arrow

Green Arrow - And this is the time delay connector, but i have two of these with the car... so if anyone has done their under dash wiring that had these connectors that have the Lighting Package, that look familiar, any guidance would be appreciated, as to where they go and what i am missing, thanks

Can't help much more than that, but the long wire should be the driver side courtesy light, located under the dash or under the heater control switches, in that area (you'll see the opening if you look there).

Thanks for that Bernard- however, it seems strange to put in a courtesy light that restricts the light so much with that tiny hole. But the length of lead would suggest that it is the driver side.

i am hoping someone with a Challenger that has the footwell courtesy lights and or Map Light can tell me what they look like and where they go, and where the Map Light switch goes.

Thanks all.

Thr courtesy light goe's above your, headlight and wiper switch area. There will be a hole there to mount it. It's actually called a, "Flood Light". Yes, like the ignition courtesy light, a twenty second delay. The "Map Light", is mounted under the dash. Below your glove compartment door, about an inch, to the left. You shoud see the mounting hole's there. My 73' Rallye has the light package, with all these goodie's. Also, you should have a trunk light with mercury switch and, fender turn signal light's, as well.
Good Luck Goldenblack440. Hope this helps

Do you have the reflective shroud and switch, for the map light? It all mounts right there, as I said, in the last post. The bulb look's a little small but, can't really tell, in the Pic'. If I lost my dome light, I know I could still find my way around the Chally with, just the map light. It's pretty darn, bright. All this stuff hooks up to your light circut's. You should already have female connect's, for all your male lighting need's.

HI Patrick, thanks very much for your reply, its cleared a few things up. I am glad you have a 73 Rallye as well ( i think its that highly optioned one in pale yellow i have seen pics of?). Sounds like you have the full Lighting Package. I think mine is only a partial package as sadly, i do not have the fender repeater lights and can't find the trunk lighting hardware either. Now i know what the Title Lamp (Flood Light) is! They must have changed the name from 71 as it was called that in the manual. I will have a look now to see where it goes. As for the Map Light- no i do not have the reflector and do not know what it looks like. I assumed it would have to be fairly bright so as to be able to read maps by. If you could post some photos of it here (and the switch as well) i would be very grateful. BUt wait until next week, because we have our Chrysler Expo this Sunday, and hopefully there will be some Challengers or Cuda's that have these lights. I will let you know. I am also looking to see where the trunk light goes. In our Aussie Chargers they are mounted in a stupid spot- right at the top of the deck (trunk) lid. So most of the brightness has dissapated by the time it gets to the luggage area. It would make much more sense to mount the light at the front of the trunk area just under that rear window panel, so i am hoping that's where they are on the Chal's.

The long lead wire in the picture, i now know must be that Flood Light. It is the type of holder the same as the ash tray and heater illumination lights. I also made some exciting discoveries today. Sadly my Challenger was not original when i bought it and the wiring had all been played with. I have one female lighting connector in place though. I found out that the yellow wire hanging from the steering column powers the IGN illumination, and the bulb works too. Also quite by accident discovered another plug under the dash that only has 12V from it when the key is in. When the key is removed, it goes to 0. So my car must have had the "Key-In" buzzer. I know it has the seatbelt warning light and buzzer system, but that has long been disconnected. Does your car have the Key-In buzzer? It buzzes when keys are left in the ignition and the driver door is opened.

Anyway, thats enough from me, thanks again.

I pulled that key plug as well as, the seat belt plug's, under the driver and passenger seat's. That buzzer is the sickist, most annoying, dying thing, Ive ever heard. :s008: If I ever want to hear that, again. I'll just plug them back in again. :bonk: I'll post some pic's of those interrior light's, you requested. I'll warn you now. Eddie's Pic's, are wayyyyy, better, than mine.
P.S. It's Top Bananna Yellow. Pretty bright but, you have already seen my photo's. :ashamed:

Where the swicth goe's. You see the air vent controller's. Then the motion detecter.(Non-Stock) then, to the right. The Map-Light Switch.

The blue bubble is, the not so impressive, flood light. Works great when there is no light, around.

Hi! Do you have a center console? Check if you have a light to your transmission indicator. To show what gear you're in. My light went from under the slap stick auto (1970 SE with A01 Light package) under the passenger side carpet and up behind the front side panel. Pretty long wire. From there it connected to the light harness, same as the map light, glovebox light and ashtray light etc.

And the trunk light is mounted on the decklid, in the little hole to the left of the sticker in the picture...this picture is for a 1970 car but I'm pretty sure it was the same place for '73, only the actual lamp and holder looked a bit different? Maybe someone else knows more about this.

Good luck!

/Robert

Thanks very much Pat and Rob, its cleared lots of things up. First time i have ever seen the map light label and light and that is a big switch! I will have to hunt around for all these things, as i love all my little lights! Even the ash tray one has to work even though i don't smoke and would never allow a person to smoke in the car. Pat- it took me a while to find where the Flood Light went~!! Then finally realised it was on the light bar. That's interesting that it has that green cover like the other lights. As you can see by the first picture of the light with the very long lead, mine didn't have that so I might just steal the one from the ash tray, or leave it off all together.

Rob, Yes, i followed the same train of thought with the trans selector light. I thought that was what the long wire was as well. But then i realised my 73 was a factory manual so it did not have this~! Luckily i also have a 71 Challenger, factory auto and as the interior is all out i had a look at that one. However the wire is orange and has a different bulb end but is very long like you say and goes all the way across the dash and out the kick panel, then back under the carpet (dunno why?!). All they had to do was run it straight down the middle. Anyway, since my 71 us being made into an RT clone with a 5 speed, it didn't need the selector illumination so i stole that and now the 73 has a nice factory one.

i found where the trunk lid light screws in, and i suppose where the mercury switch goes. Will have to find these things too, although i could probably find a generic one from an electronics store to work. Same as the time delay relay. Not much chance of finding a NOS or good used one in Australia, so will look around from another car, many of them had them, even some of the Aussie Chryslers.

Thanks again

What a mess!

Sorting it all out. The thing hanging down is an old Amp gauge. This is to keep the live 12V wires connected and not dangling around
