MSD Alternators

Has anyone here used MSDs alternators on their Mopar?

They do a mounting kit so they fit to mopar brackets I believe. Also various pulleys for the nose.

They come in 105, 130 and 160 amp versions for about $180.

I would be interested in hearing how they fit and their performance at very low rpms compared to the mopar alternator which is very poor at low speeds.

That is, if you have a 50% discount. Last time I checked (which is to say, 5 minutes ago), they were all around 370 bucks (http://www.jegs.com/p/MSD/756443/10002/-1). Add 80 for the bracket kit and 40 for a pulley.

Look here : http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/frm25485 ... rnator.pdf

"Chrysler / Dodge kit with threaded mount : will NOT fit applications that mount to the cylinder head."

With the way the alternators are installed on a Mopar (stock location), the MSD unit is a little too deep (around 2") to fit in front of the cylinder head.

I looked at those when I was shopping for a replacement (with the electric water pump, the alternator had to be mounted somewhere else, or the belt would have rubbed on the pump). I picked the low-mount bracket from MagnumHP (http://www.magnumhp.com/mounttech.php ). Then I looked at alternator options, including the MSD APS.

For the current level I was looking for (electric fuel and water pumps, dual fans, H4 headlight conversions and extra roads lights [still not fitted by the way)], I figured I needed around 100-amp. The 105-amp 1-wire MSD APS costs 380 USD!!!

I picked a 100-amp powermaster one-wire alt from MagnumHP for 200 bucks. Works like a charm, except when #2 sparkplug wire comes off with the vibrations, and discharges on the alternator housing (that seems to trigger a self-protection alternator shutdown).

$380 sounds more believable.

I made a typo. I did mean $380.

I wondered about how the fit on a Mopar because as you say there is a note saying "will NOT fit applications that mount to the cylinder head" and yet MSD sell a Mopar bracket kit?

I can't figure that one out. :hmmm:
