Low Fuel Light On

Postby Charlie Backes » 12 Mar 2005 6:03

What is the proper operation of the Special Edition low fuel light in the overhead console? I have 3/4 tank of gas and the light is on always. I replaced the relay with another one but it still stays lit. Fuel guage works OK. Where do we get a replacement relay for these?

best to my knowledge it comes on about 1/4 tank!!!!

no replacement low fuel relays- just have to find one that works!!!

it is a special one- it has a built in voltage limiter for it to work properly- you need 12 volts into it, good ground to the case- usually there is a black wire to ground-, dark blue wire from the tank goes to the gauge and another dark blue wire to the relay and the output to the light.

make sure the ground is there!!!!

71 Deputy,
Thanks, you were exactly correct. I had to disconnect the voltage limiter and connect the second wire from the relay. The relay has a built in limiter and controls the gage and light. Works fine now.

I am working on an all electronic redesign of this relay so if anyone needs a replacement.........

71 deputy! You seem to know this subject. Where is the low fuel relay located in the car? Behind the dash?

yep- look for the dark blue wire from the harness taht goes to the back of the dash- but with the low fuel relay it goes to the relay only.

here is a pic of one- not 100% sure this is a E body one-could be a c body- but gives ya a idea of what it looks like!!!
