Odd rear defog

Postby Christer » 27 Feb 2005 7:06

The two rear defogs in the pictures were recently sold for between $250-$400. Noting particular with that maybe. I thought I would show them because I haven´t seen them in the literature before. They are said to fit 70-74 Mopar E-body cars equipped with am/ fm stereo dual rear speakers. I don´t know if that is true or not though.

Why am I so intrested in rear defogs? My car originally had one when it left the factory so I plan to buy one someday.

I think when you had the dual rear speakers you needed a different set-up otherwise the speakers were in the way?

Dave is correct as usual, on my 73 with rear defog and no speakers the motor for the defog mounts on a plate put into the right speaker hole.

There seems to be a little bit of confusion about in which order the speaker and the rear defog shall be placed. I have found these pic´s of, what I belive, is a wrongly placed rear defog. I believe that the speaker shall be placed directly below the speaker grille.

Yes, I have a rear defog setup laying on the shelf. I also have bought the adapter kit. I bought it from P.G. Classic. I have not mounted it yet but it looks OK. (The pic´s above are borrowed.)

Cool, I have a pic of a 70 R/T Green with a rear window de-fogger. At first I asked the owner if he installed from the aftermarket, he frowned and said."Chrysler installed it rookie", wow I was stunned, very cool piece of equipment, did your car also have the block heater?

It feels like I have to revise what I believed earlier. It means that I still don´t know in which order these parts are supposed to be assembled. :s006: (I have found yet another rear defog mounted in a way I tought was wrong.)

hi christer,i have the am fm with 4 speakers and rear defog.the rear defog is directly under the factory speaker hole and the speaker is off to the back of the trunk. this is correct because if you reverse it the rear defog wont have a place to take the air from properly to regenerate the air from flowing and making the defog work.so what you thought was wrong is actually correct.

Thanks a lot! Mystery solved. I have never seen the complete setup mounted in a car, so if you have a digi-cam and some energy, then you maybe can post a pic or two. Thanks again for helping out to solve this issue.

hi christer, hope these photos help.the defog motor goes where the hole runs right through to the factory speaker cut out and the speaker goes on the bracket towards the rear of the trunk. also one last tip (that you cant see in the photos) the top of the bracket where the speaker goes is solid and has a small bracket included with a hole exposed that should be facing upwards towards the interior which does not attach to anything. see your last photo in this topic christer the seventh one down,it shows the unit from the top which i can not picture because mine is installed.

Thanks a lot for the photos and your help

I have never seen this setup assembled in a car before so it made my day. The fact that the speaker isn´t positioned in the same way as the left-hand speaker (due to the rear defog) should negatively effect the sound. At least that is what I think. I guess things were not that picky back in those days. Does the four speakers in your car still work? Does it sound good in the coupé? I guess you can´t compare the stereo system with todays standards. It would be nice to one day have an opportunity to listen to this setup of speakers.

the speakers do work fine and sound half decent but hey this is 1970 technoligy. i listen to the sound of the motor more than the radio most of the time anyways. also at high volume this rear defog with speaker combo does cause a bit of vibration and destortion more than the other side.i put a piece of sponge on top of the speaker bracket to reduce the ratling at high volume.it does help reduce the vibration and destortion but at least i have a bit of music with factory sound when i want it.

Ok, I understand. It all reminds me of I guy I know who once had a ´69 Chevelle with a 396". The stereo in his car had one speaker and the stereo had defenitely seen its best days but he didn´t care because all he used to listen to was the engine sound and Bruce the Boss "Racing in the streets". Guess why that was his favourite song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXwzG_4c ... re=related

I just like to add that I have once and for all decided that I want to have the right rear speaker in front of the rear defog. Maybe this is wrong but I will get the rear speakers symmetrically mounted and I like it that way. The only disadvantage is that the rear defog probably will be a bit visible when the trunk lid open. (If I get disappointed, then all I have to do is an easy switch.)

I intend to mount it this way.

It is never too late to change your mind, is it? I intend to mount them in the same way as on your car, rtse4406pack! I stumble across the photos below and their untouched, dirty look convinced me.

Thanks for your opinion, rtse4406pack.

Notice the z-shaped reinforcement bar. I have never seen that before. Do you also have that on your car, rtse4406pack?
