Alternator mounting bracket kit

I found these three pic´s on ebay. Since they are quite good and informative, I decided to steel them :oops: :lol: . Maybe they can help someone.

The kit is said to fit 1967-1974 Mopar 383, 440 Big Block Engines w/o A/C. Fits water pumps with casting numbers 2780 987 & 3698 468. I don´t know if all of this is correct but I guess so. :roll:

Yes that is the non-ac version. It has two alternator mounting holes for the difference in deck height between B and RB blocks.

I bought a new kit for mine because I was still using the old AC version.

I plan to order a kit from Year One. I think that $52.00 is a fair price. No reason to hunt an old set when a new one isn´t more expensive than that.(I have deleted my ad in the "Cars/Parts wanted"-section.)

I have got the alternator bracket kit by now. I thought it would be a simple bolt-in, but for some unknown reason it wasn´t. My usual bad luck I guess.

My crank pulley has 4 grooves and the water pump pulley has 2 grooves.
The steering pump belt lines up fairly well with #2 water pump groove and the #3 crank groove. (Numbers counted from front of car). That leaves the #1 water pump groove and the #2 crank groove to the alternator belt. My problem is that the kit demands the alternator belt to use the same grooves as the steering pump already uses. :x

I am 99,9% sure that I have bought the correct kit. The kit is made for a 987 water pump housing and my engine has a 987 housing.

(My car was originally a 318 car but the engine has been replaced with a 383. One idea that has struck me is that it isn´t unlikely that the power steering pump is from the 318 days. Does it fit my engine?)

Any suggestions or close-ups appreciated. :)

The steering belt does not go around the water pump.

I think your problem stems from using the air-con pulleys. The bracket you have is for single groove alt/water pulleys and I think the water pulley had a different offset.

I have been trying to find the diagrams of the belts in the workshop manual but I can't seem to fing them. I have seen them somewhere...

But after sleeping on it I seem to remember that with air con the power steering belt does drive the water pump but the two alternator belts do not because they go to the air con pump.

On a non-air con car I think the steering belt is only driven by the crank and the single groove alt pulley drives the water pump which I thing has a different pulley.

You know what my memory is like though. :roll:

I wish I could fing those diagrams!

Thanks Dave. I´d better start looking for a water pump pulley then!? Do you think it will be enough to buy this pulley only, or is it a must to have the correct crank pulley too? (It doesn´t matter to me if the crank pulley has two or four grooves. The only thing that matters is if it works or not.)

You had better look into it a bit more in case I am not right. I think it is the water pump pulley though. On cars without power steering they had to fit an idler pulley to adjust the belt tension on AC equipped engines. The two ALT belts went from the ALT tp the AC pump and then straight down to the crank.

I plan to visit a junkyard in the week to come. I thought that it maybe is a good idea to have some water pulley dimensions with me, like the diameter and the offset distance. I am grateful if anyone has the opportunity and energy to do these two measurements. Thanks!

Shame I use one of those silly one-inch belts on March pulleys. But that was my way around a similar problem.

I am still puzzled about the fact that the power steering pulley and the alternator pulley line up with the same crank pulley groove.

An idea that has struck me is if it would be a good idea to swap my alternator (single groove) for an alternator with a double groove pulley, and use the outer groove. What do you think, Dave?
(Or it is possible to only swap the pulley?)

You can just swap the pulley but it is an absolute bitch to get off without the correct tool.

Thanks Dave! By looking at NK481, I interpret that the waterpump&alternator pulley is supposed to align behind the power steering pulley just as you have written above.

In my case, I will choose to have them in the opposite order. I have ordered a dual pulley alternator (not a hi-output unit though) from ebay. I think I will be able use the front groove of the alternator pulley with a good result. The future will tell.

I found this pic on ebay. It seems like the owner of this car an myself have come up with similar solutions. (the engine isn´t a B/RB-block as I have)
