Where to place ECU?

Postby Mike Brown (Mikebmopar) » 21 Aug 2003 0:45

Hello! I have decided to replace the points system with the Mopar Performance Electronic Kit. I am trying to figure out where to place the orange Electronic Control Unit. I am thinking on the driver's side on the fender well since there are already wires where I can route the wiring harness that is included. Any suggestions? Any photos would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why not put it where Chrysler fitted it? Look at an engine bay photo of any post-1973 mopar and you will see it on the passenger side of the bulkhead.

Having said that - if you can find a cooler spot to mount it then it will be more reliable in the long term.

Here is a photo of my engine bay. You can see the ECU on the firewall/bulkhead.

Very nice looking engine bay! Did you use sheet metal screws or nuts/bolts? I was reading in the instructions to make sure there will be nothing behind the mounting point that the screws or bolts would interfere with.

You can use either. I did use sheet metal screws but bolts are better as you want a good bare metal earth on them. Sheet metal screws eventually get rusty and you loose the ground connection.

That is the isolator for the mechanical fuel pressure gauge Bryan. There is a diaphram inside. A 'T' piece in the fuel line just before the carbs feeds fuel to this side of it. The other side of the isolator is a non-flamable liquid that runs to the gauge in the dash. For the pressure gauge to read accurately the isolator has to be mounted at the same height as the gauge.

What did you do with the excess wire from the ecu to the distributor and the coil? Did you just loop it or did you take the connector off and shorten the wires?
