Headlight switch

Postby Hans Buijnink (72challeng » 17 Aug 2003 14:55

Hey all! Just noticed my headlight switch on the instrument panel isn't working as it should. It's like this:

- in the lower position: nothing works off course
- in the center position: rear lights, dash lights are working, headlights do not.
- in the upper position: headlights are working, the others are not.

When the switch is positioned 'between' the upper and center position it's all working fine. My guess is 'because of this it's caused by the switch, or does anybody have another opinion?

How can I disassemble the instrument panel (rally dash) to get to the switch? thx

Hans.
Take the instrument lights out and remove the lower plastic surround that matches the dash top.
You should then see all the mounting screws for the switch panel. It is trick to remove without scratching the wood effect so be careful. The wires unplug and the round knobs pull off to allow you to remove the individual switches.

Test it with a meter but it does sound it is faulty unless you can see evidence of someone re-wiring it.

My dash lights were going off and on by themselves so I replaced the switch with a new one from ebay.

PS.
Make sure the frame for the light switches has a good gound. Fit an earth wire to make sure.

I just realized I have this very same problem. Guess I have to tear down the cluster to check it out. Thank you for your help, Dave!

Maybe I even could solve why the wipers have quit to park when switched off. I suspect bad ground wiring.

For the wipers you usually have to take the wiper motor apart and clean things up in there. The workshop manual has some tests you can do with it off the car so you can tell if it is working before you re-install it.

Make sure you mark exactly the position of the "gearbox" cover is on the wiper motor before you remove it and take a photo of the insides just in case you can't remember how it goes back together.

Took out the switch panel, cleaned all connections and added white vazeline here. Now working :)

Forgot to test if anything happened to wiper parking mode

i did that too, its good advice, otherwise it has to rely on the screws to do it. And if you've painted everything...
