Now I have had access to the workshop manual (which I suggest you get a copy of because it is a great help) I can see what you need to do.

Yes you need to take off the steering wheel.

Yes you need to remove the rotating part of the column (as described on this board somewhere).

Then you need to remove the turn signal and hazzard switches.

Then you remove the next section of the column just like the last only this bit has a snap ring too.

Then you remove the steering lock.

Then you insert a wire into a hole to release the ignition lock.

You really, REALLY need to see the pictures in the workshop manual to do this right unless you have done this with similar cars before.

I have done this several times with the whole of the unit out on the work bench. It is not fun, especially if it is in the car. It always seems like there should be a short cut but there is none. The lock rings can be a real pain. Be patient and do not break anything. Be extra careful with the turn signal switch. It is easier to replace the lot of the column than go after the main switch or key lock. Is this trip really necessary? If so best of luck and enjoy.

Thanks Christer I recieved your email with pics and step by step directions. I guess its not totaly necessary. I bought new door locks which came with the ignition switch. I did not have a key for my doors. I am a glutin for punnishment so I'm going for it. Thanks to all!!!

It sounds like the way you get to the lock is just like getting to the lock on my '87 Dodge Dakota. You will probably want a depressing tool to depress the locking ring.

I mean, you'll need a depressing tool to depress the outer ring, which is used to lock the steering wheel in place when the ignition is switched off, to remove the locking ring.
