Battery strenght

Postby Roel Bester (Roelb) » 02 Mar 2003 20:31

Hi, this might be a stupid question, but what is the strongest battery I can use in my '71 383, I bought it with a small 60 amp battery. I have a slight problem sometimes with hot starts, and can hear the engine doesn't swing quick enough
thanks

is the link to the bit on Batteries I wrote a while ago. Also read the section on Grounding as many problems like this are caused by poor chassis connections.

But basically use a lead/acid battery as big as will fit in the battery tray you have. The biggest reserve capacity it has the better.

As the batteries in our vehicles have needed replacing, I've bought AC Delco as these are probably the best available and are maintainance free (USA made). The one in my 4x4 lasted 6 years before dieing. At only 25% more expensive they are good value if they last more than twice as long as a "normal" one.

I got a 1020 CCA duralast with a 120min reserve in mine. Just get the biggest thing you can find almost anything will fit.

I do not recommend fitting a maintenance free battery to an old car. The charging circuit in old cars is not suitable. Use a normal lead acid or possibly the best choice is to use a LOW maintenance battery. Make sure it is kept charged and don't leave it standing for a long time without charging it and it will last years.
