Although I have an autometer voltage gauge under my dash for over a year now I still haven't connect it to the electrical system. I tryed it once but that wasn't the right wire I connected it to; it showed instantly 18 volts and started to get warm... What would be the right way to get it working as it's supposed to ?

Eh?

What have you been doing Hans? Image

You either have a faulty gauge or you connected it like an ammeter in series with something pulling a lot of amps. Volt meters must always be connected across a circuit and not as part of a circuit.

There will be a couple of terminals on the back of the gauge that are marked -ve and +ve. The -ve just goes to a good earth. The +ve goes to any good 12 volt power source like the accessory terminal on the fusebox or the 12 volt terminal on the ignition switch. Any 12 volt source will do that is not in series with anything.
