While I'm busy replacing the wiring in the engine compartment I was wondering what the funcion & name is of the next thing.

It's a metal, cylinder formed thing (1/2" in diameter x 1.5") that's connected to the firewall with only one wire which leads to the positive side of the coil. What does it do? The ignition also works without it.

Hans. It might be a radio suppressor to cut out igniton noise in the radio.

Hans, this is not an original part of your car. My car does not have a piece like this at the firewall. I believe what Graham says is right.

Then there's mothing to worry about when I loosen the thing. The less wiring & non-functional parts the better! Thanks guys.

It's probbaly a condenser for the radio. I put one on my car , it should only have one wire. Hope this helps.

Hans I have the difinitive answer to your question. In my original post, I thought it was a capacitor to help eliminate radio interferance. My guess was correct. According to the 1973 Dodge chassis manual, on page 8-76, Chrysler used 3 capacitors to supress engine and voltage limiter interferance. They were as follows
In the alternator
On the back of the instrument cluster
and lastly the one on the coil, with the lead connected to the positive primary terminal of the coil.

Hans, my car is a radio delete car. So this could be the reason why my car has not this part.
