Tail lights not working

Postby Dale1035 » 26 Aug 2015 19:41

I have been working on fixing an overcharging problem for a couple of days. It seems that I replaced a bad voltage regulator with another bad voltage regulator. With the overcharging I blew a fuse and the radio.
I now have a good regulator and was checking all lights and gages when I found that the tail lights are not working. Headlights, turn signals and break lights do work. Any suggestions on where to look for a fix?

Double check the connector terminals under the carpet between the drivers seat & the sill.
If you have one lamp out then a possible short, poor connection or bad fitting/bulb.
Both of em however would indicate a supply problem.

I Have checked the plug and I am not getting any current to the Black wire which is the one that the wiring diagram say goes to the tail lights. This is leading me to think it may be the switch. However the headlights are still working.

Bad switch is a possibility, difficult to do cos of the push fit connector on the back being such an odd shape but if you jump a wire from the headlamp terminal to the taillight terminal you ought to be able to eliminate it.

If it isn't then you have a break in the wire somewhere, it's only a couple feet of loom so not hard to trace.

Thanks,
I did jump from the terminal with one black wire (getting 12V) to the one next to it with 2 black wires and the tail lights came on. Will I damage anything else if I Cut the 2 black wires going to the same terminal that are not getting 12 V of power and hook them up to a separate switch? I have checked Year one and E-Bay with no luck at finding another switch.

Get a new switch Dale, the other terminals will most likely fail soon & it's probably cutting voltage to the lights.
Do a google search for it, there are loads out there.

Thanks for all of your help. I had been looking for a switch on e-bay without with out any luck until this morning. I have ordered one from e-bay that should get here next week. I hope it is a good one.

Light are working. New( used ) switch in place and I had to take it out for a drive. Now I just need to replace the radio, but no hurry for that. I'll just be happy listening to the 340 purr.
