speedometer replacement / repair

Postby Dale1035 » 14 Aug 2015 1:45

The speedometer in my 73 is in need of repair or replacement. The problems with the existing speedo are 1. Reads too fast. 2. Bounces .
I was told that the gage cluster was changed from standard to rally which included a 150 mph speedo. Would putting a std 120 mph speedo fix my problems, or do I also need to change the gear in the transmission? Thanks

I don't think speedos are even the same diameter between standard and rallye cluster.
You can have your speedo restored, there are several shops which do that (Tachman, Auto Instruments, etc) .
There are only 10 kinds of people in this world... those who understand binary and those who don't !

Even just a knackered old speedo cable will cause a bouncing needle.
Try that first.

The speedo reading too fast will be down to the plastic gear drive in the trans.
They are 4 or 5 different colour coded gears available.
