Rear Axle advice

I have had the death sentence on my old 8 3/4 suregrip 489 cased (cone Type), the whole thing is beyond repair acording to Bacca the expert. A replacement suregrip is going to be big bucks and he has suggested I just have an open rear end, but I am worried that after having a suregrip till now I will notice the reduction in traction and spin on turns to much. Am I worrying to much ?. I don't do any serious racing except the odd traffic lights and I have always liked the way she pulled from the lights :lol: Any advice would be great

What engine do you have? Is it spinning both rears up now?
An open diff isn't impossible to live with but it all depends on the amount of power and torque you shove St it. Nothing wrong with a cone type diff , can be repaired too despite some opinion :wink:

It is getting a slightly warmed up 318 so nothing special, but still can chirp the rears nicely :lol: caus the old suregrip appears to be a high milage unit he said everything is shot

That engine should'nt cause too much problem, even with a couple of hundred horsepower at the tyres, and an open type diff will be cheaper too.
The cone type can be machined to revive a worn unit, but if the gears themselves are damaged or the bearings are noisy then you may as well bolt in a known good replacement.
I use an open diff on my relatively strong 440 and although its impossible to floor it in 1st and 2nd, even 3rd if cornering, it still drives nice, and with a 4 speed too, so i would'nt worry too much
Johns a good bloke to deal with as well, knows his stuff thats for sure :wink:

Suregrip on a 318 powered car is overkill. You could live without it easily.

Try it and see. If you feel you do miss it then it is easy to simply bolt an Auburn LSD unit in there at a later date. It is an easy thing to do yourself if you can borrow a dial gauge with magnetic base to measure the backlash on the ring.
