Just pulled this out from underneath a 76 cab type Dodge camper van, I think its a Spicer 60 but I'm not certain, looked at a few websites and still no clearer. Its got a limited slip diff in it , heres a piccie............

No part/casting numbers on it anywhere?

There are a couple of very rough casting numbers on the edge of the two main webs that go from the centre housing to the pinion. I'll check em at work in the morning, maybe spray a bit of stove paint over em and then rub over with some emery cloth

Looks like a Dana 60 (or could be a Dana 70/80, they all have 10 bolt covers). A "60" (or 70, 80) cast on the housing will tell you that.
Except for the "Spicer" drain plug, it looks just like this one :

You might find a code stamped on the back of the passenger-side axle tube, which can be decoded with that information :

Thanks Russ and Fabien I've seen a web page with a diagram of the different housings and where the axle tube markings are supposed to be, I need to clean it up a little and try again. As a last resort I could just remove the cover and measure the ring gear diameter

Pulled the cover off this morning and found a 9 3/4" ring gear, so definately a 60, but sadly no lsd, just an open diff, fitted with 4.10 gears, clean as a whistle inside but its a boat anchor now isn't it

Oh I know what that axle is. It is one of those grey ones.

Stick an ARB in it . Air locker can give you the best of both (open and locked diff). These are big in the 4x4 world, not sure about the musclecar/hotrod world. http://www.arbusa.com/Products/Air-Lockers/10.aspx

An air locker is useful when you might need to have a locked diff with no torque applied (rock crawling for instance), so you need to have a way to switch it on. For muscle cars, when you need to have the diff locked, it's generally under a high torque situation. A TrueTrac diff works fine. It is simply turned on with the accelerator pedal...
The Dana 60 is real heavy though...

Dead right about the weight Fabien I really only looked into this axles spec so that I could help some one out with it, I don't think i would use something this heavy, its a brute ...............rather stick with my 8 3/4" and a suregrip

If it came out of a Van 3/4 ton it's a Dana 60, Chrysler didnt use the Dana 70 or 80 in delivery vans. If it were a 70 or 80 you would definitelt know it, they are huge I have a Dana 80 in my Dodge truck it's freaking huge! BTW, ade you should be able to wire brush the upper right side corner webbing a a '60' should be visible. That rear would make a nice cut down rear for cheap to a pro-streeter or drag racer but there isnt a pinion snubber mount for it on the yoke side.
