wrong axel in my car? 72 challenger

Postby mustangboy » 31 Mar 2011 6:24

on my car [72 challenger] i have a 429-cased 8 3/4 axel with inboard springs and the car is tubbed. ive tryed to put the springs back to the stock position but they now rub on the tyres :? .im thinking its the wrong axel and is to short? i want to put a suregrip / lsd diff in if as its spins one wheel alot with the 440. does anyone know where i can get and axel complete with diff ect and a rebuild kit [green type bearings and gaskits ect] thanks jamie

You mean 489 case?
More likely the wrong offset on the wheels. Too much backspace? Then again it could be from a charger or something.

I posted something once with the dimensions of the axles from model to model but can't find it now...

Axle and housing lengths are in this link.

Like Dave said, you probably are going to need new wheels with a different offset. I think a fairly popular upgrade along with moving the springs in, is to install a B-body rear end. You may need to change that too. Lets hope you only need a pair of wheels.

hi dont relly want to change the wheels as they are fairly new, just looked though the last owners previous posts and he found out it was a b body axel :x . when the last owner put it up for sale he put "Rear is 429-cased 8 3/4 with open 2.91 gears..." so i wernt sure what rear end it had????. it looks pants with lowering blocks put on it so want to put the springs back in the original location so it lowers it.

Well "case" is the wrong word anyway. He must mean a 489 center section (pumpkin) with the gears in. Look on the "nose" of the diff on the left side behind the rear UJ. There will be a number cast there and the last three digits will tell you what type of center section it is. There were three main types. Two are strong and one weaker.

The housings are all the same and just different lengths (track widths).

I take it that when they have moved the springs inboard they have left the old spring perches in place? So you have two sets of spring perches?

Are you sure the outer set are in the correct location and everything lines up as it should?

Probably a truck dana at that price. Steer clear of dana's unless you plan more than 550hp with the auto. Otherwise you are just adding weight for no reason.

If it had been my car (and it nearly was) I would be trying to find a good case only. Then source a couple of half shafts (or buy new) and build the axle with the parts from the old. Maybe slip some 3.23:1 gears in there while I was on? But that would put the cost up.

Any of these work?

Keep in mind that the spring mounts can be bought new and welded on where you need.
