Neutral Safety Switch

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I can not get my back-up lights to work. I have replaced the neutral safety switch (2X), and traced all the wires. If I jumper the plug two outside contacts, the light works, but when connected to ths switch on the transmission it does not. Is there possibly something going on inside the transmission?

You need to drop the trans pan and make sure the shifter lever is activating the switch as it should.

I take it the car starts OK in park and neutral but not in gear?

Hi Dave,

Yes, the car starts in P & N, and not in the other gears, so from the Neutral Safety Switch standpoint if functions properly. But I do not seem to get continuity on the outside pins when it is in Reverse.

Thanks!

Try working the switch by hand. Maybe the trans is not pushing it in enough?

Hi Dave,

Yes, the switch works if not installed in the transmission. The back-up light turns on without pushing the actuator of the switch.

Time to drop the pan and look for why it is being pushed in when installed.

Unfortunately, I think that is the answer! Thanks.
